Current News is a segment of the television newscast that updates viewers on current events that are in the news. It may also be referred to as Newsflash, Special Report or Breaking News. It typically includes a ticker and distinctive audio cues that inform the viewer about the story at hand, while allowing network affiliates to insert their station identification in place of a station imaging promo or program reminder. Before 24-hour news networks existed, breaking news breaks were often limited to major events that elicited nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to interrupt their regular programming. These included the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. Other events that would trigger an interruption might be military action such as missile strikes or terrorist attacks.
