About Trending
Breaking news is the term used to describe an urgent story that warrants a news broadcaster to interrupt current non-news programming, and/or regular network or local newscasts, to cover it. Such coverage may last a few minutes or, in extreme cases, multiple hours or days. The breaking story is typically introduced through a graphic opening, and accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, these breaks were usually reserved for extremely serious and time-sensitive events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. These breaks were often called “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. NBC News has also utilized a breaking news ticker during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for cut-ins.
