Streaming news is the kindling for a new generation of news operators. With low barriers to entry, new players are able to enter the market. These new competitors will likely be overtly political.
These new competitors may change the way political news is covered. For instance, online video streaming may reshape political news coverage.
The new online video streamer may also encourage viewers to abandon cable news subscriptions. These new streaming news services offer cable-style programming and the promise of earning a share of the $3 billion profit from cable news.
For instance, Fox News Channel has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. This shows that TV audiences are willing to pay for content. However, commercial-averse viewers may not want to pay for news.
Streaming news has proven to attract niche audiences. It allows viewers to customize the experience. The major streaming networks repurpose programming from cable into regular nightly news shows. They also offer documentaries and news analysis. They are chasing breaking news.
These networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They have also invested in local news programs. They are expected to produce 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
CNN, Fox, and MSNBC earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020. These three networks plan to enter the online video streaming market. They have high hopes for the technology.
However, the major streaming networks have yet to prove that their formula will work. Unlike cable TV, there are no restrictions on the amount of time viewers can spend watching the networks.
