Breaking news is a report on an event of such importance that it interrupts the usual programing of television networks or local broadcast stations. The announcement is normally made through a countdown sequence, telling the audience to stand by and then an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. Often, the lower thirds and other graphics on the screen are altered to convey a sense of urgency. Until the era of 24-hour news channels, breaking news reports were usually restricted to events such as natural disasters or national tragedies that elicit nationwide coverage and require multiple stations to interrupt programming to carry the story.
