Trending is a segment of a television or radio broadcast that covers an ongoing story, such as a major weather event, crime spree, political scandal or other topical issue. The story is often broken by a network anchor interrupting regular programing or, in the case of a 24-hour news channel, live programming. The break is usually accompanied by a graphic and distinctive music cue. If the breaking news is serious enough to interrupt network affiliates’ local programming, a countdown sequence will typically appear before the network feed is interrupted. Occasionally, lower thirds or other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. In the past, such breaks were typically reserved for events of national importance such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
