Breaking news is a term used for any major current event that requires a national or local television or radio network to interrupt regular programming. The network typically alerts its affiliate stations and tells them to “stand by” while a special report is being prepared. If the event is of a very serious nature, and may require sustained coverage for multiple hours or even days, the network may suspend commercial advertising altogether and instead run a countdown timer to give affiliates an indication of how much time they have to prepare their own local reports.
