Current News is a term used in the United States by television and radio networks to denote breaking news stories that necessitate an interruption of regular programming (or, for network newscasts, of their feed). A breaking story may be followed by a news anchor, or simply by a graphic or ticker which conveys urgency. In the case of severe weather events, a special report may be overlaid on top of regularly scheduled programming until the event has passed. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news channels, cut-ins were limited to extremely urgent or high-profile events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or a national emergency such as a hurricane or tornado warning.
