Breaking News is a news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or in some cases, a network’s regular scheduled newscast). Often, breaking stories will be given the status of “Newsflash” or “Special report” and may be overlaid over station imaging promos, lower thirds, or other graphics. Alternatively, the event may be covered through a ticker that reoccurs during regular programming (such as the one used by CBS News on the day of the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963). Such breaks are commonplace at 24-hour news networks, where breaking news events can occur at any time.
