There have been many innovations over the years to deliver current news. In the 1980s, Ted Turner launched the Cable News Network. But despite the investment in streaming operations, the channel failed to attract viewers.
Today, the major networks are repurposing cable programming to meet their audience’s needs. They offer documentaries and reruns, and a variety of news analysis. The streams arrive on demand, and allow viewers to customize their experience.
As a result, news networks have realized a strong financial return on their investments. For instance, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC earned a combined $3 billion in 2020. CBS News has also been aggressive with local streaming coverage, and plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
In addition to the major streaming networks, there are a number of free news streams. These services promote cable-quality news, and try to convince viewers to cut the cost of their cable subscription.
Some of these free streamers offer ad-supported service. Others advertise on free TV channels, and have tried to entice their audience with the promise of a cut of the profits.
It is important to note that these free news streams do not serve the same audience as the mainstream cable news outlets. Instead, they attract niche audiences.
Another example is the BBC’s Newsround, which offers daily stories on national and international news, sports, and entertainment. Science news is also covered regularly.
Meanwhile, CNN and other news networks have spotted an audience for streaming, and have taken steps to capture it. In addition to news programs, the streaming channels have developed educational programming. First News Live, for example, offers a weekly news broadcast for kids.
