During the prime time hours, breaking news can interrupt local newscasts. In these cases, the anchor or host will remind viewers that there is more information available in their local news. The breaking news theme is designed to convey a sense of urgency.
When the coverage of a breaking news story has reached a certain point, the network may switch to a reverse countdown. Typically, the reverse countdown is five seconds or less. The network may then resume previous programming.
Depending on the length of the coverage, the network may have an anchor or live reporter available. They may also integrate analysis of the story into the program. They may also have regular commercial advertising suspended. The coverage may be passed to the reporter at the location of the breaking event. The reporter may also share more information as it becomes available.
Networks may also schedule preemptions for certain anticipated events. This may include scheduled speeches by political leaders. An example is the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike that interrupted a new episode of Scandal. In the event of an emergency, the station master control may have information sent to all affiliates. The station may also have the opportunity to break away from the network feed and start an extended edition of their local newscast.
Local news stations may also choose to have an outro promo, which will redirect viewers to a streaming news channel or the network website. Some stations will also cut away to video of the story.
