Breaking news, also known as a Newflash or special report, is an urgent, short-form news story that requires television and radio stations to interrupt regular programming (or in the case of 24-hour cable news networks, regularly scheduled live reporting) and insert a ticker graphic to announce the news. This is usually followed by a countdown sequence to give affiliated network stations time to join the breaking news feed. Before the advent of 24-hour news, such interruptions were generally reserved for extremely serious news events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or a catastrophic natural disaster like a tornado or a hurricane. Today, many major network affiliates use “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled programs for certain breaking stories, reducing the need for a traditional cut-in.
