Breaking News is an interruptive television or radio news report that is issued when an event occurs that is deemed to be of sufficient urgency to warrant interruption of non-news or regular newscast programming (or, for network affiliates, of their regularly scheduled network feed). Often, these reports are preceded by a countdown sequence, letting affiliate stations know when they should switch over to the breaking news item. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics are also used to convey a sense of urgency.

Breaking news is generally accompanied by an open graphic with a distinctive music cue. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of coverage was only used for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or severe weather, such as a hurricane.
