Trending is a breaking news feature used to cover events that are popular and are currently being talked about. When such a story breaks, the network will interrupt its regular programming and send out an alert to its affiliate stations, telling them to stand-by for special reporting. Usually, this will involve an opening graphic with distinctive music cues. If the event is large enough, network affiliates will interrupt their own programming as well with a local news anchor, and use a special ticker to track the latest developments. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or widespread natural disasters.
