Current News is a term used by media organizations to describe the coverage of breaking news. It is generally applied to news that has occurred during the past day or two, although some news outlets may also use it to refer to stories of less importance that are being reported on as a way of filling time.

When a breaking news event occurs, national network newscasts are interrupted and local affiliate stations (if any) may join the feed. The newscast will open with an opening graphic, often featuring a music score that emphasizes the urgency of the situation; this is usually followed by a live shot of a reporter or anchor (if possible).

Some networks and stations advertise their stations/networks as being “first for breaking news” or “breaking news first” to convey a sense of immediacy and urgency to their viewers. Some networks and stations will continue to broadcast their live shots of the reporter or anchor until they can get a reporter/anchor at the scene, at which point the newscast may be cut away to video or pictures that follow the story during its progress.

A network’s newscast or local station’s breaking news report will typically end with a brief disclaimer for those who want more information. It will then typically lead into a short promo for the network’s website or that of a local news station, as well as other platforms for continued coverage.

In some cases, the special report or breaking news report can pre-empt entire episodes of a program, particularly if it is new to air or highly rated. For example, NBC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike pre-empted the low-rated The Blacklist: Redemption twice in the Eastern and Central time zones.
