Streaming has changed the way we get our current news. With the click of a button, we can see live broadcasts, reruns, documentaries, and news analysis on our own time. And we can watch it anytime, anywhere.
In the past, cable television and broadcast news have worked in concert to deliver breaking news. However, in recent years, streaming has begun to challenge that status quo. The new trend is attracting mass audiences and niche audiences.
It’s also shaping political news coverage. For example, online video streaming is likely to attract new overtly political news operations. Also, the increased number of news outlets can feed audience polarization.
But the news industry hasn’t been ready for the change. When CNN launched its streaming service, it was criticized for failing to attract viewers.
Critics missed a burgeoning cable audience. They missed the rapid rate of adoption and the pent-up demand for alternatives.
One solution is to offer a subscription service, like Readly. This service provides users with a digital magazine. There are more than 6300 titles available.
Another option is to produce a streaming news app. NewsBreak is one of the most popular apps. It allows users to follow current events, block topics, and express their opinions. These features have helped to repurpose programming from cable.
Similarly, CBS-owned local stations have already nichified their coverage. They take advantage of local reporters’ writing skills to develop links and information.
The major streaming networks have been in business for a decade. They’re repurposing cable content and scheduling regular nightly news programs.
