When a news event occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, or in the case of a network newscast, regular ongoing coverage, it’s time for Breaking News. A newsflash or special report graphic appears with a distinctive music cue, followed by the network news anchor, who then introduces the story. The breaking news may be a single event that will quickly dissipate, or it may require extended coverage for multiple hours or even days. If the national network newscast is in progress when the breaking story happens, it will usually pause for the affiliates to switch over to the breaking news feed, a countdown sequence and a countdown ticker appearing on screen.
