Streaming has become a popular way to consume news, particularly for younger generations. The technology allows viewers to watch news on the go and provides a customizable experience.
A recent survey found that viewers spend more time watching streaming programming than they do watching broadcast TV. A number of news networks have launched streaming operations to capture a large share of the streaming market. These networks provide breaking news, documentaries, and reruns.
The new streaming model may well reshape the way we consume political news. News networks that are primarily driven by commercial revenue have been struggling to compete with cable, but with the advent of online video streaming, viewers can select what they want to watch and when they want to watch it.
Streaming news has also proven to be a strong draw for niche audiences. One of the largest streaming networks, NBC News, has a large local streaming news division. They plan to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
A study released this month by the Pew Research Center found that Americans spent more time watching streaming programming than they did watching broadcast TV. The average household subscribed to at least one streaming service. This creates an opportunity for the news industry to build a library of local and global content.
The online model has the advantage of being unbiased and fast. It provides comprehensive coverage of news, often with a news analysis section. It also allows for time-shifting.
