Streaming news has disrupted the traditional broadcast model of broadcast news. Streaming allows viewers to watch news on any device, wherever they are. This new approach has been adopted by news networks as they saw a potential advantage in serving an audience that streamed.

News streams have been around for a decade. Initially, major streaming networks repurposed programming from cable news channels. These networks offer reruns, documentaries, and news analysis. Some are free. Others charge a subscription fee. They want to share in the $3 billion that cable news channels have earned in recent years.

Streaming news allows viewers to watch their favorite programs wherever they are. It also allows for news archives. Unlike broadcast news, it arrives when viewers want it. And when viewers don’t, they can switch to a different channel. These free news streams resemble cable’s approach, and they are trying to promote cable-quality news.

In addition to the traditional news reports, some news networks also offer breaking news, which is a short, live report. These reports can last as little as five minutes and as long as several hours. When a breaking news story breaks, the network may interrupt programming. For example, ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted a new episode of Scandal.

Typically, network programs will pause for a few seconds, allowing affiliates to join the feed. At the same time, the anchor will remind viewers that the full story will be on local news.
