Streaming news services, like CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, have emerged as new competitors to traditional broadcast news. In addition to providing breaking news, these networks also offer news analysis and documentaries. They also repurpose cable programming and offer reruns, and offer viewers an opportunity to customize their news experience.
For the most part, streaming news is delivered on demand, but networks also archive their content. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations, and have high hopes for the future. This is not to say that streaming news is better than traditional news, but it reduces the scarcity factor in the media equation.
The most important story of the moment is often called “breaking news.” News reports can last from a few minutes to several hours. Sometimes, a story is so important that the network will suspend commercial advertising. Other times, the lower thirds are changed to reflect the urgency of the situation.
In the case of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse, a local CBS affiliate piped the coverage to streamers. When the event was finished, the station was given the opportunity to start an evening newscast. If the news story continued, the network may switch back to a newscast. The local station may also be given the opportunity to break away from the network feed.
The anchors at local news stations remind viewers that the full wrap up will be on local news. They may also cut away to a video of the story.
