Breaking news is a television and radio news coverage event which warrants an interruption of normal non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour cable and satellite networks, regularly scheduled programs. The interruption is usually signaled by a countdown and distinctive music cue or, at some times, a Newsflash graphic. The report can last a few minutes, or may run for hours or days. In the past, the use of breaks or cut-ins was limited to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that triggered stations to interrupt regular programming. Today, some national networks provide special tickers during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for such interrupts.
