When an event happens that warrants breaking news coverage, the network halts its current non-news programming (or, in the case of a live network newscast, pauses the program and puts on a countdown to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed) for a special report. This segment is often referred to as a Newsflash or a Special Report. This used to be a rare occurrence, but has become more common with the rise of 24-hour news networks.
Originally, breaking news was only interrupted when the news was so urgent that it required immediate national coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a severe weather event.
