Streaming news is gaining ground in the U.S., with 85 percent of households subscribed to at least one streamer. The online video business is likely to reshape political news coverage.
Streaming news resembles conventional television, but it also provides a way to customize your experience. With streaming, you can view news in a variety of formats, including documentary, news analysis, and reruns.
Major streaming networks offer regular nightly news programs. Programs that last longer than 20 or 45 minutes may need to be rescheduled. Some network affiliates may join the feed, while other local stations may break off to show a different program. When a breaking news story breaks, network talent may interrupt the coverage to discuss it and provide additional information.
A “breaking news” anchor introduces the story and may include music and other elements to accentuate the urgency of the event. The anchor may also remind viewers that more details will be provided in a local newscast.
Streaming allows for viewers to watch news anywhere, at anytime. It also reduces the media equation, which makes building news libraries more affordable.
Breaking news during prime time may interrupt an overnight news program. For example, in April 2017, a missile strike by the Shayrat terrorist group in Syria interrupted an episode of the show Scandal. In this case, the network re-introduced Scandal at the point of interruption. It also resumed previous programming when coverage ended.
The most significant news events may last days or weeks. Local stations may be given the opportunity to break off from the network feed and begin an evening newscast. The station may also cut to a video of the story.
