Trending is a term used to describe breaking news events that are currently trending on social media and/or search engines. Trending stories are often the topic of discussion on newscasts, radio broadcasts and online media outlets. Typically, when a breaking news story is in progress, a network will interrupt its regular programming and alert its affiliates that a special report is coming up. Depending on the seriousness of the event, the station may also suspend advertising to allow for extended coverage. Often, a graphic will be displayed with a distinctive music cue. Tickers, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
