If you are interested in current events, you’ve probably heard of breaking news. However, you may not know what it means. Breaking news is a term that is interchangeably used with other terms, such as late breaking news. While breaking news is meant to capture the attention of viewers, it also often means nothing. If the news is truly breaking, you may have to wait until the next day to learn about it. The following are examples of breaking news.

Breaking news may interrupt television programming, particularly if it is prime time, or it may occur during a new program. Alternatively, breaking news may interrupt a highly rated episode, or a program with little or no time to air. ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted an episode of Scandal. It’s important to note that broadcasters have different rules for broadcasting breaking news. While a breaking news event is an exception, the network’s standard policy is to provide a live feed as long as the broadcaster permits.

After a breaking news story is reported, the network or local station may cut away to rerun the broadcast and continue with the story. Another common strategy is to switch the coverage to another reporter on the scene, where more information is available. In this case, the breaking news anchor may remind viewers that they can check out local cable news channels or network sites to see if any further coverage is needed. The network may also air a rerun or repeat of a story that has just aired.
