Breaking news, also known as late-breaking news, is a term used to describe the most important story of the moment. It can also refer to a story that has caught the public’s attention but has not yet been reported by a news organization. Sometimes it is used in place of “just in.”
The main story in a newspaper is its headline, which is the biggest bold print on the centerfold. Its purpose is to attract readers. Similarly, trending news, which is driven by reader-generated hits, is also called ‘buzz news.’ These stories tend to trend well despite having little impact on society. For example, ABC’s newscasts use the words “breaking news” and “special report” together.
Breaking news may interrupt highly-rated, prime-time programming. Local affiliates can notify viewers of upcoming interruptions so they can prepare for these times. They can also create special topical graphics related to a particular event. This strategy is often used when local television stations have limited resources. Whether these are live or recorded, current news can be an important part of local television programming. If you are a fan of television, you may even want to subscribe to local channels.
Some news reports may last just a few minutes, while others may take hours. Oftentimes, major events last for days. For example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy occurred on November 22 and 26, 1963, while the attacks on September 11 occurred from September 11 to fifteen. In some cases, networks will also integrate analysis of the story, which may be conducted in-studio, by phone, or through satellite. Broadband may be used to offer uninterrupted coverage, and regular commercial advertising is suspended during major events.
