Trending is a short news segment that appears on the bottom right corner of the screen during a regular TV newscast. It is a summary of news that is trending around the world and may include trending topics on social media, trending searches on Google or YouTube and other related topics. Trending is commonly used to increase viewership and draw attention to certain segments or stories on the broadcast. It is also used in conjunction with a breaking news story. Breaking news often interrupts non-news programming (such as a network newscast) and usually features a graphics package with distinctive music cues. Traditionally, breaking news was reserved for major national events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or for severe weather events, when cut-ins and alert crawls during regular programming would have been interrupted.
