Breaking news is a term used for any news event which elicits immediate and nationwide coverage, or requires multiple stations to interrupt current non-news programming in order to provide live updates. Depending on the urgency of the story, breaking news reports may last only minutes or continue for hours and sometimes days. Often, a national network feed is interrupted during regular programming with a special graphic and music cue, and network affiliates are encouraged to insert their station identification in place of the lower thirds or program reminder normally used. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of break was typically reserved for major news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
