When a news event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming, or even a regularly scheduled network newscast, the broadcaster usually alerts its affiliate stations to stand by. A countdown sequence then begins, allowing the affiliates to switch to the network feed and join the report. Once the national feed is switched over, a news anchor opens with a brief description of the event and the station’s local coverage. In many cases, the lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to give a sense of urgency to the story being reported. This type of cut-in is often referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report. Before 24-hour news networks existed, these interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
