During breaking news events, television and radio stations interrupt regular non-news programming or, until the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, regularly scheduled network newscasts to report on the event. This is known as a special report, newsflash or news alert. A countdown graphic is displayed on the screen, and a special music cue is used for the report. Depending on the urgency of the story, the special report may last only a few minutes or continue for hours or days. During this period, network affiliates are required to insert their station identification overlaid on the special report.
