While cable news, broadcast TV and the Internet have their own benefits, the free-to-stream services want to tap into that money. Many of the free news services look and act like the cable networks, urging viewers to ditch their cable subscription and take advantage of their quality news. The question is: will they succeed? If so, how long will they be able to keep viewers engaged? If they can’t, they will simply go away.

Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have the potential to change the way we consume news. Streaming news is now available on demand, and it follows us wherever we go. And it eliminates the issue of scarcity, a problem that dominated cable TV decades ago. Moreover, most households subscribe to a streaming service, so current news is now accessible on the go and wherever we are. So what’s stopping news networks from embracing this new way of distributing their content?
For streaming, major news networks are putting their hopes into the service. CNN+, for example, failed to gain viewers. But they’ve spent millions of dollars to start streaming operations. And NBC News Now is now producing 10 hours of programming per day and claims to generate more than a hundred million video views per month. In the meantime, the competitors are not just ignoring the potential of streaming and experimenting with it. They are embracing it with both hands, but it’s important to keep in mind that the success of the new streaming service is still not guaranteed.
