Trending is a news segment on television that talks about what people are searching for on the internet. It is often aired as a break in regular programming and usually includes a graphic with the current search term. It may also include a countdown, or other graphics that signal an upcoming breaking news story. Typically, networks will alert affiliates to the special report and ask them to interrupt their normal non-news programming for it. Breaking news coverage is common on 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, but was rare in pre-television history, except when an event elicited nationwide coverage requiring many stations to cut in.
