Trending is a segment of a newscast, or special report, that follows a topic of great interest or importance. These segments can last for a few minutes, or hours and days. The subject of the report is usually introduced by a graphic that uses a distinctive music cue. It is usually followed by a news anchor who speaks to the issue, and may include a live image feed from a location of the story. The term breaking news is sometimes used for stories that are of such urgency that regular programming must be interrupted. Before 24-hour news channels existed, such interruptions were normally restricted to events of national importance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
