Streaming news is like conventional television, but it travels wherever the viewer goes. This means you can customize your viewing experience.
Streaming news networks have been around for a decade. They repurpose programming from cable and broadcast, creating a seamless news experience for viewers. In addition to nightly news programs, the major networks also offer documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. They’ve also built digital subchannels for programming, allowing for additional programming outlets.
The term “breaking news” can refer to either a live or recorded story. The term was first used during the aftermath of the 1963 John F. Kennedy assassination, when CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite interrupted the evening news to discuss the shooting.
The “breaking news” graphic often features music, while the lower thirds may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Anchors remind viewers that full coverage will be available on their local news. The news may also be passed to a reporter at the scene of the breaking event, who may also provide more details.
The news may also be interrupted in prime time. At this time, the network will allow other network affiliates to join the feed, so they can resume their newscasts. This may include an interruption to a “live shot” of the anchor.
Depending on the length of coverage, the network may continue to show the live shot, or may resume their newscast when the coverage is complete. When a breaking news event is over, the network may resume previous programming, or they may switch to a “reverse countdown” to show a recap of the story.
