When an event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, regularly scheduled news broadcasts, a network will usually inform its affiliate stations to stand by. A countdown sequence will then begin, as affiliates join a network feed containing the breaking news. Once the countdown is complete, a graphic will appear with a distinctive music cue and a news anchor will introduce the story at hand. If the news is particularly urgent, it may be accompanied by an alert crawl that overlays on top of regular lower thirds and other graphics.
