A breaking news report is a segment of a television or radio program that interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to cover an event of urgent importance. Breaking news reports often feature an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue, to signify that the broadcast is being interrupted. In the days before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were rare, and typically reserved for extremely important events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their normal programming. Likewise, severe weather alerts would normally be handled through cut-ins during regular programming, or through special crawls on lower third graphics.
