When a significant current event occurs that is so important or time sensitive that it requires immediate coverage, breaking news (also known as newsflash or special report) alerts viewers to the story through an interruption of regular non-news programming. Such interruptions typically begin with a countdown sequence that allows network affiliates to switch over to the national feed and are usually preceded by a distinctive news anchor graphic with an accompanying music cue. This may be followed by a scrolling ticker or lower thirds, which are often altered to convey urgency and impact.
