In broadcast media, breaking news is an event that requires interruption of current non-news programming, or in the case of a 24-hour network, regular scheduled newscasts. Such reports can last for a few seconds to a number of hours or even days. They are often accompanied by an audio cue such as a countdown or a distinctive music sequence. Alternatively, lower thirds or other graphics may be used to convey urgency, such as for the assassination of John F. Kennedy or an approaching hurricane. Breaking news is sometimes known as a Newsflash or Special Report. For television and radio stations that carry a national network feed, the network typically alerts affiliates to the event in advance, requiring them to interrupt their normal programming.
