A breaking news story is a television or radio report of current events that require urgent coverage and prompts the network to interrupt regular non-news programming, usually with a countdown sequence. This is typically followed by an opening graphic or a newsflash-style alert and a special music cue. Depending on the severity of the event, the newsflash may last for only a few minutes, or it may be sustained through the hours and days, with analysis delivered through in-studio analysts. In the past, before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were typically reserved for very serious news stories that required numerous stations to interrupt their programming simultaneously (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy). NBC, for example, began using “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled broadcasts in recent years, lessening the need for cut-ins.
