Trending is a news story that is currently popular on various social media platforms. It’s often an article or video that is being discussed and shared a lot. It is sometimes used by companies to promote their products or services.
Breaking news is a term for when a significant event occurs that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, regularly scheduled newscasts). Typically this involves a countdown sequence to allow time for stations to switch to the network feed; the station’s own lower third and logo may be shown overlaid on top of it. Until the development of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were generally reserved for extremely urgent news events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, that required nationwide coverage and immediate interruptions at numerous stations.
