Some common topics include government, war, health, education, and the environment. It is also common to hear about events that are humorous, entertaining, or even controversial. Although government proclamations have been called news for centuries, technological and social developments have greatly increased the speed of news dissemination and its content.

A variety of models have been proposed to explain the creation of current news. The Mirror Model argues that news should represent reality, whereas the Organizational Model focuses on applying pressure to governmental processes. Other models, such as the Political Model, argue that the news is representative of various political pressures and ideological biases.
