Current News is a term used by broadcasters to refer to stories that are being reported in real time. These are the most significant events that are currently occurring or being covered live by the network or station and may have a substantial impact on the public.
The story is introduced with an opening graphic or other introductory piece, usually with music. This is followed by the introduction of a breaking news anchor or presenter (often a weather reporter), who welcomes viewers and introduces the news story at hand.
If a national network newscast is in progress when the breaking event occurs, the newscast will usually pause for several seconds to allow affiliated stations to join the feed. An opening graphic, with music and a voiceover, will usually be rolled over again during the break.
Local television stations may take over for a breaking news story, especially when it is a major event. During this time, coverage may be continuous or the anchor may remind viewers that more details will be provided on their local newscast or a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program.
After the breaking news has been reported, the network or station may choose to re-join programming that was occurring before the event, or to begin new programming. The decision is made by the news director of a network or station, depending on the nature of the breaking news.
Often, the newscast will end with a graphic and a disclaimer stating that viewers should go to the network’s news division website for further information. In some cases, a special report lower third will also be displayed.
