Trending is a term used to refer to an item that is receiving significant social media activity. The item may also be referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”. In North America, breaking news typically interrupts regular non-news programming, or if a network is running its national newscast in progress, it will often notify its affiliate stations to stand by for a special break in coverage. Occasionally, breaking news events are so severe that they require nationwide coverage and thereby compel the network to interrupt all regularly scheduled programming. This is referred to as a “cut-in” and was common prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels.
