Years ago, Richard Simmons reached out directly to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer. After nearly a decade of silence, he wanted to share his story.
Then, in 2024, as preparations were being made for the interview, he died.
ABC News was then invited to his California home by Richard’s brother, who wanted to honor Richard’s wish for Sawyer to tell his life story.
“The Mystery of Richard Simmons: A Diane Sawyer Special” airs on Tuesday, May 12 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC and streams the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
Trending is the term used for a breaking news story that is currently gaining interest among viewers. The breaking news is often highlighted through a special report that interrupts either regular non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, during live, ongoing coverage. The breaking news is typically accompanied by a newsflash or alert crawl, and a distinct news anchor introduction and opening graphics that signal to viewers that the broadcast has been interrupted. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events that elicited nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt programming simultaneously.
