Breaking news is an urgent report about a breaking story which warrants an interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of network television broadcasters, regularly scheduled national newscasts. Upon the occurrence of a breaking news event, the affected television station(s) and/or radio stations interrupt their programming with a special graphic, accompanied by a distinctive newsflash or special report-style music cue, to alert viewers of the urgent nature of the reported event. Often, the newsflash or special report will last only a few minutes; however, breaking news events may require a longer period of coverage, such as in the case of a major national disaster, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required nationwide news coverage and caused many stations to interrupt their normal programs.
