When a news event occurs that warrants interrupting current non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, regularly scheduled breaking news coverage) and the event is deemed to be of such importance as to require immediate reporting, the news broadcaster will generally alert all of its network affiliates to be ready to break away from their regular broadcast to carry the special report. This is often done via a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report” graphic, with the network newscast paused and counting down to allow affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed. In the past, such cuts-ins were reserved for severe weather events and certain other situations requiring immediate attention.[1] Today, 24-hour news networks have adopted a more continuous approach, with the breaking news feed overlaid on the bottom of the screen and station imaging promos and lower thirds altered to convey urgency.
