About Trending

Breaking news is a television or radio segment that interrupts regular programming to report on an urgent or time-sensitive event. Typically, the breaking news segment is accompanied by a distinct music cue and distinctive graphics. Depending on the story, the breaking news segment may run for only a few minutes or may last for hours or even days. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were usually limited to extremely important events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Newsflash and Special Report are other terms used for this type of coverage.
