Breaking news is the reporting of urgent, developing news events that require immediate coverage and/or may force broadcasters to interrupt regular non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). A breaking news event can prompt a national or local station to announce to its viewers to “stand by” for an interruption of the program, with the broadcaster then using a countdown sequence to allow its affiliated stations to switch to the feed before the report begins. The breaking news report itself may last only minutes or may be sustained for hours and days, depending on the nature of the event.
