Breaking News is a television or radio news story that is so important, time-sensitive, or highly publicized it requires an immediate interruption of regularly scheduled non-news programming. It may also be referred to as a Newsflash, an Alert crawl, or Special report. Typically, network affiliates will use a countdown to the breaking news, which may include a special logo or distinctive music cue, to alert viewers that a live interruptible broadcast will soon begin. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were reserved for exceptionally urgent or widespread events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
