Trending is a breaking news segment on television or radio that highlights stories which are currently being talked about. These segments usually feature a topical music cue, a top story graphic and a news anchor, and can last a few minutes to multiple hours or even days, depending on the severity of the event. Occasionally, major events will interrupt regular non-news programming (or even network newscasts), with the broadcaster asking its affiliates to stand by for the break and to mute their own station imaging, as well as using a distinctive newsflash or special report opening. This is sometimes referred to as a cut-in or alert crawl, and used to be commonplace until the advent of 24-hour news networks.
