When a breaking news story occurs that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming, a special graphic is displayed on screen, typically with a distinctive music cue. This graphic, known as a newsflash or special report, may be overlaid on the lower thirds of network affiliates’ normally scheduled programs, often with the station identification information appearing in the top left corner. The breaking news event may last a few minutes or for an hour or more, with analysis being provided by reporters in-studio and/or via satellite or the internet.
